Xiamen
Xiamen is located in the southeast of Fujian Province along the southeastern coast of China and at the mouth of the Jiulong River. Inland, it borders on the Zhangzhou and Quanzhou Plains. It also looks out towards the Taiwan Strait and sits right opposite to Jinmen, Taiwan and the Penghu Islands across the ocean. It has a land area of over 1,565.09 km2 and a sea area of over 300 km2.
Xiamen is one of the first five special economic zones (SEZ) in China administrating 6 districts:Siming, Huli, Jimei ,Haicang,Tong'an and Xiang’an. South Fujian Dialect is the language which is predominantly spoken in Xiamen.It is said it was once egret inhabited place,so it is also called Egret Island.
The history of Xiamen dates back to the ancient times.Under the jurisdiction of the municipality are seven districts Gulangyu Island,Siming,Kaiyuan,Xinglin,Huli,Jimei and Tong'an |
