Wang's Grand Courtyard

 

Wang's Grand Courtyard is located in Jingsheng Town 12 km in the east of Lingshi County, Shanxi Province. It is an outstanding representative of the Jin-Merchant County group in Shanxi, and also the only fully enclosed castle type complex built along mountains among the courtyards in the Jinzhong Basin. It was built by one of the Big Four Families in Lingshi County in history, Jingsheng Wang's, the descendant of Wang in Taiyuan during the eras of Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong and Jiaqing, covering a total area of more than 250000 m2. In the Gao's Cliff, Red Gate Fort, Wangs Ancestral Temple, etc. which are opened as "China's Residential Museum of Art" and "China's Wangs Museum", there are 123 big or small courtyards, 1118 houses, covering an area of 450000 m2. It has the overall characteristics that it was built on the hillside of a mountain, there are rows and rows of houses which are imposing, having complete functions, fundamentally inheriting the courtyard style of front hall and rear bedroom that was formed in the Western Zhou Dynasty in China, plus the tile carving, wood carving and stone carving decorations exercising one's inventive mind, with elegant connotation, which are rich, practical and beautiful, integrating emotional appeals of the south and north, having very high cultural taste, and it was praised as the "China Folk Imperial Palace", "Forbidden City in Shanxi" and "Best Dwelling of Chinese Local-style Dwelling Houses" by many experts and scholars at home and abroad.
